WE MADE IT!!!

Yup, that's right, I'm sitting here typing this post in Seattle! Over 2,800 miles, 7 days, 9 states, visits with friends and family, tons of Brain Quest questions, and quite a few cups of coffee later, we have arrived in our new home. When we rolled in it was 57 degrees and rainy. Haha, awesome.
It's kinda funny, I was reminded of the feeling I had when I got to Ghana. Weird, you know, to compare Ghana and Seattle, but it's the whole personal journey thing. When we entered the city through the tunnel titled "Seattle-the Portal to the Pacific" I had such an odd emotional coctail going on-- extreme excitement combined with a bit of anxiety, nervousness, and doubt. Will we Southerners fit in in the big Northwestern city? Will we find a home soon? Will I find a job I like? Will I be able to handle the cold drizzle for the next 5 years?! AH!
BUT, don't worry about me, folks, I like the whole stepping out of my comfort zone thing. It'll take us awhile to get settled, I am sure, and to figure things out, but we'll be just fine. It's nice to have Brian. At least I have someone to be homeless with ;)
I'll try to get pictures up soon, but our hotel wireless is not the best quality, so I'll keep you posted on that one.

Mizzou to Missoula

Yestereve we arrive in Missoula, Montana after a short stint in Idaho.
Which is surprisingly cool looking. Apparently Idaho is like, a massive
volcanic rock plain cuz the entire place had just massive black rocks
sticking up out of the ground and were cracking just like dried lava.
It was super cool and kinda eerie. Then we went through multiple
thunderstorms before we made it into Missoula. Once here, Katie leapt
out of the car and hug-fested with Katy Branston (who is hosting us).
We then went and hiked "the M" on the side of a small mountain.
It was a nice view. Then we hung out with some of her frisbee friends
before having dinner of burgers and beers at "old Post".
This is the last day now. We should make it to Seattle this evening around 5ish.
And then a new journey of finding and establishing housing begins and Katie
gets to try and find a job, hoorah! Well, we have a special treat for you now:

Today, my friends and followers, we have a guest blogger: Katy Branston.
Friends, Ms. Katy Branston;
Katy, Friends.

Greetings new friends! I probably know some of you from camp...or maybe Elon...because I had the pleasure of knowing Katie Strick in both of these regards. So when I heard Katie was moving West, I made sure she made a pit stop to visit her favorite Katy with a y. So you might be a couple behind-the-scenes questions that you feel are unanswered. Take heed, because I'm here to answer them. You're probably wondering:

-Are Katie and Brian still getting along after all of this time in the car together? Believe it or not, yes. They attribute it to the fact that they've actually been playing a giant game of Quiet Mouse since they left Memphis. It's still a tie.

-Where has been their most favoritest state yet on the road trip? They may not realize it yet, but I'm sure as soon as they cross over the Montana-Idaho border, a deep, empty hole is likely to form in the pit of their hearts. It's shape? Montana.

If you would like to book your own vacation to scenic Montana, I'm offering travel packages that start at $9999.99. Hey, a girl's gotta make a living.

And now I must say goodbye to the traveling duo as they embark on their final leg of the journey. They will probably leave kicking and screaming, but rest-assured, they have new lives to look forward to. We will meet again some day soon!!!

I date Cruiser.

Hola.
So yesterday Brian told ya'll about the Temple Square and getting called Tom Cruise and whatnot... What he forgot to mention was that we spent the morning at the Farmer's Market! While it was not quite as memorable as our experiences at Temple Square, it was super cool. If you know me, you know I love fruit. So I was pretty much in heaven. We got the best blackberries ever, and I ate the most heavenly fruit pie-- they made it custom, and I got the mix fruit. It had peaches, rasberries, blackberries, and mariamberries (sp?), with really good crust and amazing whipped cream. Seriously. I could have died happy, and I have been daydreaming about another one ever since. And guess what, people?? Brian ate the fruit pie, too! While I love fruit, he is not such a fan, so this was an impressive feat. We also saw every kind of dog imaginable (but no more timberwolves). There were tiny purse dogs (puke) and giant miniature-horse-sized dogs. There was even one that looked like a lion. And I have decided that I want a standard poodle or a labradoodle or something that has a poodle mix. I like dogs, but can't handle the shedding, and I figure a poodle is the way to go. But years from now of course. Though, in my life of unemployment, I would have time to take care of one! ;)
Anyway, this morning we walked across the park and had a lovely breakfast with some of Alex and Keriann's friends, who were pretty cool. Now we're just chillin and will probably go hike later. The weather is pretty sunny and nice, but windy. I love fall.

PS- I put more pictures up on the Photos page. There is the slideshow we had before, a slideshow of Arches, and a slideshow of our time in Salt Lake. If it's annoying and sends you to our picassa site, just look at the pics on there. It gave me tons of grief, and I don't feel like messing with it anymore. Enjoy!

Secret Doors and the Cruiser

Hey guys, you may think we would have some crazy encounter with mormons since we are in Salt Lake, right? Well, we did.
We also asked for it.
So we went to temple square (MormonTown)
and went up in their corporate building (ya, like google corp. super creepy powerful)
and an old lady greeted us at the door. After about 2 minutes of tour-guiding us, she asked if we were mormons. We of course told her, "Naw, Lady." then she responded with, and i quote, "Oh. But you all look so nice and clean. And you seem so happy!"
because those are unattainable without Joseph Smith as my spiritual guide.
AAAAANyways.
so that was fun, they have a gorgeous garden in there, and not to mention an enormous temple
that non-mormons arent allowed to enter. BUT WAIT
it gets better.
There is a secret door.
I kid you not. We were just enjoying a flowerbed and sitting behind the massive temple, when we saw a young woman walk up to what seemed like a wall and press an otherwise unnoticed keypad. She then swiped her mormon-card, got scanned by the security camera (set into the wall) and then the wall opened a small door which she slid into. This could only have led down to the secret catacombs underneath the temple. Or the great volcanic lair of a dragon that they serve their abundant baby sacrifices to. We sat there for a bit and watched another young woman use this same secret entrance. I plan on sneaking in there some day, but I will be bringing Glamdring with me, because I want to see it light up when orcs attack me beneath mormon-town.

Backtrack with me a bit, to before we went to Temple Square. We are walking out of the farmers market, i have some delicious cinnamon bread with me. On our travel to the square however, we hear shouted from beside us, "hey, Tom Cruise!" and we notice that a rotund, shirtless, and apparently homeless guy is calling out to me. He then says, "That's a nice green shirt, Cruiser!" as a genuine compliment. I was tempted to sign him an autograph as Tom Cruise to make his day, but the Cruiser is a bit crazy these days so he mightve cracked down on my fraudulent autograph. Well that's all I got for right now. Gonna go relax for a bit with my now sonic-filled belly.

Brian

Ohh, Utah.

Hey guys, sorry we failed to post last night.
Yesterday we left Moab and spent the morning in Arches National Park. It was way cool. I would suggest going there if you never have, but it's pretty much in the middle of nowhere and is quite the trip. But if you're ever that way, hit it up. Canyonlands is right near it, too, and I hear that is really cool, though we decided to opt out of that one.
We got to Salt Lake City yesterday afternoon, where we will be spending the weekend with my brother and his fiance. They have a corgi dog named Huck, who is super cute, and way skinnier than the sausage corgi my parents have (sorry, Mom, it's true). We took him for a walk around the beautiful park that is just across the street and he was quite excited to see grass, dirt, and anything that moved. After being here last night, the city seems really cool. Weird, but really cool. Apparently the Olympics being here really made the city a lot more awesome and a lot less strange. The parks are beautiful, the city library is really cool-looking, and the downtown area just seems really nice.
Today we are headed to the farmer's market (that was featured in Bon Appetit mag) and perhaps to Temple Square (learn a little about the culture, ya know).
Pictures of Arches coming soon, we promise!

Wolf Day

Ahhh... to be out of the car... It's a glorious thing.
Today we experienced some extremely odd scenery changes. We started off North of Denver, where it was still pretty flat, headed into the Rockies, and then came out into canyonlands/desert, where we are now.
On our drive today we stopped in Vail, which was cool, but expensive. Much to my chagrin, the ride up the mountain was $22 per person (!) so we did not do that. Alas, I shall go up a mountain another day. We did, however, take a break from being in the car and walk around Vail. I must say, I felt the altitude. We were about 10,000 ft above sea level, and my sea level body was not handling it very well. Brian drove a lot today because of me not feeling well. What a trooper.
Oh, exciting thing of the day (that I am sure Brian will tell you more about)! We petted a timber wolf! Seriously. It was awesome.
And we're adding a photo album, so hopefully it will work. Check it out.

-Katie

Today had some serious ups and downs. That road out of Denver was really rough on katie's car, and driving a car thats in pain is no cupcake either.  But I'm gonna' quit boring you with that sobstory, and get to the important part, wolves. Or more accurately, a wolf. A timberwolf. A domesticated timberwolf. This thing was huge. Like a husky mixed with a lion. It was brown/gray and freaking badass. This guy apparently raises and trains them as pets, which is also super badass. It takes twice the attention to training that dogs do, according to the aforementioned man. But results in exponentially greater cool factor according to every man alive or dead or yet to be born. Also, it was fluffy. According to Katie, "It was so fluffy I could die!!!" Man, I will have a pet wolf in my lifetime now. It is for real folks.
That's really all I cared about today. so....

Brian

Monkeys in a Barrel

Hey, folks, we are coming to you live (if you check this at the right time) from Berthoud, CO (just north of Denver). We spent a lovely evening with my cousin Shawn and her two dogs. Katie is currently eating a bagel and some super fresh orange juice. Today we are gonna drive back through Denver, then go west to Moab, UT and try to camp out or something. Which brings me to the greatest new fact ever: Tarantula's migrate. Yea, migrate. Like geese. Or Monarch butterflies. Imagine, you are camping with your parents (as Shawn was) under the stars in cool California and you wake up in the night feeling a slight pitter-patter across your sleeping bag. And you sit up to see the ground moving. But alas, it is in fact a total blanket of tarantulas migrating in the middle of the night. I'm not quite sure where this natural phenomenon takes place, but I am so there. Anyone who wants to join me for Tarantula Watch 2013 or whenever, you comment on this junt and we can make it happen.
On a non-spider note, we will try and upload more pictures this evening, but we may be sleeping in the car so our internet access is questionable.
Did anyone know Qdoba is a fat rip-off of Chipotle? are they the same company?
Well Katie is making typing motions at me so I guess I'll pass the computer to her, lata mi amigos.
Brian

Brian was super excited about that Turantula thing. I will NOT be joining him for that one...
You know what my favortite thing is about this trip? It's the people we're seeing along the way. It's not just us and the road. It's us and the road (and mountains!) and Ced, and Luke and Amy, and the Schaeffers, and Shawn, and my brother and his fiance, and my friend Katy in Missoula. We get to spend time with these people and talk about things that have certainly brightened this trip. I had this thought last night when Shawn (who is considerably older than Brian, but they are cousins), told us stories about his grandmother, who died when he was young. She sounded like the most incredible woman.
Brian is telling me we've got to go, so later. We're hopefully gonna go on a mountain today! YAY! :)

From sea to SEA...

Aight, so today in our massive boredom in the middle of Kansas (more on that in a minute), we discovered that both Brian and I were on the east coast in March-- he was in Florida and I was at Hilton Head, SC-- and drove back to each of our schools. Meaning, (insert drum roll here) between March and September, we will have both driven from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific! Talk about an American road trip. Woooooh, boy, that's a lot of road. And gas... sigh...
We left the Schaeffer's this morning at a good time, and just arrived in Denver (ish) this evening! We are officially in Mountain Time zone, fyi. The drive today was all of Kansas. All of freaking boring Kansas. Here's what we saw today, in the order we saw it (please, try not to get too excited)...

Panera! (had to get my coffee fix)
Wheat.
Topeka. It was desolate. I don't think people live there.
Wheat.
Wheat.
Wind farm (actually pretty cool).
Wheat.
Wheat.
Sunflowers.
Wheat.
BUFFALO!
Wheat.
Sunflowers.
Gas station.
Wheat.
Wheat.

And finally..... (wait for it!)....

MOUNTAINS! AHHHHHHH! I was so excited to see mountains. I claimed that I saw them on the horizon every 15 minutes after we crossed into Colorado. I think I was hallucinating. The mountains in the wheat fields was like my oasis in the desert. I was so excited to see them. Oh my gosh.

There were a few things we learned today though... Buffaloes are the rodents of the Great Plains, no one actually lives in Kansas, and I am a genius when it comes to Colorado trivia. Seriously. I got all 5 questions of the Colorado Brain Quest. Bam, baby.

Tomorrow's agenda: Leave the Denver area early and starting our journey through the mountains, where we will break at Vail and hopefully (depending on cost) take a ski lift up the mountain.

PS- I'm sitting outside and it's 80 something degrees. So glad to be out of Memphis and it's center-of-the-earth temperatures.

Friends Let Friends Couch-Surf

Sleeping at the Shifrs was a dream come true. I sleep horribly the night before a morning departure, so that last night in memphis i didn't sleep for squat, but this last night in KC; mmmmmmmmmm.
I woke up so fresh at like 7, as Shif was leaving for work (we all went to bed at 11:30) and then Katie and I took showers, and now we are ready to hit the road for this 11+hr day of driving out to Denver(ish).
Well I better get off of here before Katie gets out of the bathroom; laters!

4 states, 500 miles, and 8 hours later

Hey hey hey.

Here we are in Kansas City, Kansas, at the house of the newly-wedded Schaeffers. Today we left Memphis, drove through super exciting (!) Arkansas and Southern Missouri. We stopped in Columbia to see Ced, a friend of Brian's from school. We drove by Brian's old house-- I think it was strange for him to be there again and not actually live there. And now we are in KC where we had dinner with some other Missouri friends. It was a good day. We learned some exciting fun facts thanks to Brain Quest states version, and Brian attempted to heat chicken on my dash. He failed.

Tomorrow: Kansas. Oh, Kansas. I hear there is lots of flat land. Lots of corn. And the occasional wind farm. Woot.

PS- If you ever read this and are confused by the things Brian writes (like how we're headed to San Diego), you might just want to pay attention to my posts ;)

This didn't work, Brian ate cold chicken.
Ced!
Mmmmmm Sonic.

Como esta, ese! We just rolled into KC this evening; had a lovely dinner at the Garden of Olives with our friends Luke/Amy and Shifr/Morgan. I got free fried zucchini! And I ate some of it! Earlier we caught slushies with Chocolate Thunder at the sonic in CoMo. Man driving took forever. And we got waaaaay too much of it still to go. But that's cool. I almost puked after eating some peanuts in the car; it cause a minor freakout considering I was driving. I think it's about time for HonBon though, so I gotsta take off now. Peace.

Poor Marty...

Hello, everyone!

Welcome to our blog. We decided to create it just to keep up with our friends back east (or rather, more east than the west coast...). In case you were out of the loop, Brian and I are headed out to Seattle, Washington. Brian is going into a PhD program in Chemical Engineering at the University of Washington, and I am currently unemployed and hoping to find a job doing whatever I possibly can! If I can finnagle a deal where I can just paint all day, that's what I'll be doing ;)

Anyway, we leave tomorrow on a road trip to the Emerald City! My car, which my roommate named Marty the Mazda, is looking quite full. Both Brian and I have managed to cram (almost) all our possessions into it, as well as some great road trip snacks and old Brain Quest states quizzes. Everything else will be shipped or stored until we can sort through it later. We're super excited to go! And along the way we will be seeing many good friends, relatives, and siblings, so it should be a good trip. Thanks for stopping by, and we'll post again as soon as we can!

Katie

Alright, folks, it's game-time. I ain't got much to say right now, just ready to hit the road in the morning. In case anything goes wrong, we got the Safe Word.  To San Diego we go.
